KUCHING, Aug 28: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah will begin the inaugural ‘Kembara Kenali Borneo’ road trip along Pan Borneo Highway from Sept 3 to 13.
Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the journey involves a total distance of 2,154 kilometres (km) along the mega road project starting from Tawau, Sabah, up to Telok Melano, Sarawak.
He mentioned that the King and Queen’s entourage would officially arrive at Sarawak’s border from Sabah on Sept 7 through Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Merapok, Lawas.
The entourage will pass through Lawas Town to Lawas Waterfront before continuing their journey to Brunei Darussalam, where the royal entourage will stay for two nights (Sept 7 to 9).
On Sept 9, the convoy is expected to arrive in Miri to continue the road trip along Pan Borneo Highway.
“The entourage would drive through main cities along the road involving Limbang division, followed by Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Sri Aman, and Kuching.
“The road trip would end at Zero KM Telok Melano on Sept 13,” Abdul Karim told a press conference at the Baitulmakmur II building here today.
Abdul Karim, who is also Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and the minister-in-charge of the road trip, further said that the convoy would be filled with various programmes with the theme ‘Journey of Culture and Nature’.
Among the locations that the King and Queen will visit are Lawas Waterfront; Miri Handicraft Centre; Coco Cabana Miri; Kampung Pangkalan Lutong; Pantai Bungai Bekenu; Kampung Penan Muslim Batu 10; Rumah Panjang Raymond Plen, Sg Gelam, Sebauh; Tokong Yu Lung Tian En Si Sibu; Kampung Bandung Sibu (dinner); Pasar Central Sibu (breakfast); Masjid Bahagian Sri Aman (lunch); Fort Alice Sri Aman; State Banquet dinner at Pullman Hotel; earthbreaking ceremony for a mosque in Kampung Telok Melano; and Zero KM of Pan Borneo Highway in Telok Melano.
“It is our hope that the ‘Kembara Kenali Borneo’ royal tour, where we would see the King himself driving along the Pan Borneo Highway stretching about 1,198km long, would leave behind good memories for the King and Queen, their royal children and the whole entourage from Istana Negara,” he added.
Abdul Karim also informed that the royal entourage alone would consist of about 20 vehicles.
The road trip was organised by Istana Negara in collaboration with the Sarawak government, Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and resident offices. — DayakDaily
