SIBU, Oct 13: A painter at the Rantau Panjang Shipbuilding Zone was killed in a freak accident while at work today.

Sibu District Police Chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit disclosed the victim, 44, was painting a ship when suddenly his scarf which was wrapped around his neck was caught in a brush grinder.

The victim was from Rumah Along, Sungai Mujong, Kapit.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics from Sibu Hospital at about 8.45am, Stanley added.

A police inspection of the scene found that the tail of the scarf worn by the victim had been caught up in the grinder.

Based on an initial testimony from the victim’s brother, it is believed the victim’s neck was entangled with the scarf he was using and the tail of the scarf was entangled in the brush grinder.

According to him, the victim’s colleague only became aware of the incident after his attempt to call the victim was met with no response.

“The witness then went to the victim’s place of work and found the victim lying down motionless,” he added.

The body has been sent to Sibu Hospital for further action.
