SIBU, May 12: Kumang beauty pageants are a platform to showcase cultural heritage and are not ‘demeaning’ to women, says Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
“This is where we exhibit our ‘ngepan’ (Iban woman’s traditional costume), ‘sugu tinggi’ (headgear), crafts, and more,” he said at a pre-Gawai celebration at the Kapit Civic Centre last night (May 11).
According to Nanta, the pageant is a platform to exhibit the Iban cultural heritage and the community civilisation.
“So, during a competition, both Kumang (women) and Keling (men) will display traditional Iban costumes,” he said.
Nanta, who is also the Works Minister, emphasised that while showcasing cultural heritage is essential, it should align with the true essence of ‘Kumang’.
“We all understand the meaning of ‘Kumang’ to signify the most beautiful woman.
“We want to present the most suitable candidate to showcase our cultural heritage to the public. Therefore, if you encounter such a post, kindly leave a comment and offer advice.
“Look at others; they proudly exhibit their cultural heritage to ensure people are aware of it,” he said.
