Kapit firefighters save SK Sungai Amang admin block from fire

Firefighters are seen dousing the ceiling of the administration building to put out the remaining flames.

KUCHING, April 4: Quick action by firefighters save the administration block of SK Sungai Amang in Kapit from being destroyed by fire today.

The Kapit fire station in a statement today said it was alerted about the incident at 4.39pm and responded by deploying a team of firefighters to the location.

According to the statement, initially, the school staff tried to put out the flames using two fire extinguishers but were unsuccessful.

“Firefighters who arrived at the location 13 minutes later found that the flames had started burning the walls inside the school’s administration block, and proceeded to deploy two water hoses from the Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department) machinery offensively and defensively, including breaking the ceiling, before successfully extinguishing the flames,” it said.

Firefighters also utilised a bolt cutter and circular saw to cut the grill of the building in order to gain access and open all the doors and windows for ventilation to release heat and smoke.

“Total loss is still under investigation. The fire was caused by electricity from a short-circuit,” it added. — DayakDaily
