Kanowit woman foraging for river snails believed to have been killed by snake bite

KANOWIT, Sept 5: A woman who went looking for snails in Sungai Ulu Machan was found dead yesterday.

Kanowit district police chief, Deputy Supt Tega Bilong said that the victim, 48, had the day before at about 4pm went to Sungai Ulu Machan, near Rumah Rundang to look for river snails alone.

Tega said, at about 7am on September 3, after she had failed to return home, the longhouse chieftain together with other residents went to the river to look for her.


They managed to find her body 13 hours later at 8.15pm along the banks of Sungai Ulu Machan.

“The result of the investigation found that the victim was bitten by a snake on the right wrist,” he added.

According to him, three police personnel took more than two hours travelling over land and river to reach the scene to conduct the investigation.

The vctim’s body was buried according to Iban customs. — DayakDaily
