KANOWIT, Jan 14: As the aftermath of the recent floods continues to unfold, the Kanowit Sports Complex remains the sole active temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in Sarawak, providing refuge for 20 flood victims who are currently seeking shelter from the rising waters.
According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the displaced individuals consist of 13 families from Rh Leo Ng Lipus and Rh Alice Jimmy, who were forced to flee their homes after heavy rains and floods struck the region around 11am on January 13.
Meanwhile, two other evacuation centres—at the Nanga Ngungun Multipurpose Hall in Kanowit and the KPCA Community Hall in Kenyalang Park, Kuching—were officially closed earlier today.
The closure of these centres follows the receding floodwaters affecting Rh Suzuzie Lily on the night of Jan 12, which allowed 20 residents sheltering at Nanga Ngungun Multipurpose Hall to return to their homes.
At the same time, the KPCA Community Hall, which had accommodated 18 individuals after a late-night fire destroyed a single-storey terrace house and damaged six others at Lorong Sim Kheng Hong 2, Kenyalang Park, was closed at 2pm today after all victims had relocated to the homes of relatives or rental properties.
In another development, 19 individuals from SJK Chung Hien in Sarikei were swiftly evacuated to safety after the school entrance was inundated by floodwaters this morning. The timely response ensured no casualties, though the situation remains fluid as authorities continue to monitor affected areas.
As Sarawak remains on high alert, local authorities are closely tracking water levels across the state, working tirelessly to safeguard the well-being of residents and provide timely assistance where needed. – DayakDaily
