SIMUNJAN, Sept 30:The RM40.8 million Kampung Sageng Riverbank Erosion Protection Project in Simunjan is significantly behind schedule, recording just 24.95 per cent progress as of Sept 25 against the scheduled 68.77 per cent.
Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said closer monitoring was necessary to ensure flood mitigation and riverbank erosion protection projects in Simunjan remained on track, particularly with the rainy season approaching.
“Any issues affecting the progress of the projects must be identified and addressed promptly, especially as the infrastructure is intended to protect public safety and reduce flood and erosion risks,” she said as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Rodiyah said this after inspecting the Kampung Sageng Riverbank Erosion Protection Project and the Simunjan Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) Phase 1 here on Tuesday (Sept 29).
The Kampung Sageng project involves the construction of a 968-metre riverbank protection structure aimed at reducing erosion risks to surrounding areas, including nearby residential settlements.
Rodiyah said adjustments and technical changes had been necessary during construction after actual river conditions were taken into consideration, contributing to the slower-than-scheduled progress.
She called on the contractor to submit a clear and effective recovery or “catch-up” plan to accelerate construction and prevent further delays.
Meanwhile, the RM22.34 million Simunjan RTB Phase 1 project had reached 70.09 per cent completion as of Sept 25 and is expected to be completed by April 2027, subject to a decision on an extension of time.
The project comprises drainage system upgrades, construction of a retention pond, deepening of Sungai Kelka, installation of tidal control gates and construction of other flood mitigation structures.
Rodiyah said priority should be given to the remaining works and urged that they be expedited so residents could benefit from the completed infrastructure within the stipulated timeframe.
“All parties involved must take the necessary measures to address the projects’ delays, particularly as flood risks remain a concern among Simunjan residents towards the end of the year,” she said.
