KUCHING, Dec 5: Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba)’s initial investigations into the explosion at CityOne Megamall by their fire investigation (FI) team are “parallel” with the findings by its K9 unit.

State Bomba director Khirudin Drahman said: “Today, we used our forensic dog Sue from the K9 unit to ensure that there are no other elements such as bombs or other criminal elements other than (what was discovered through) our initial investigation that it was caused by gas leakage.”

Three people died and 41 were injured when the explosion at a soon-to-be-opened food outlet rocked the mall at 3.37pm yesterday.

Speaking to reporters at the scene today, Khirudin said judging from the pattern of the blast via CCTV recording from the mall and injuries on the victims, “we believe they are parallel.”

“Both teams have taken samples, which they will send to the laboratory for confirmation.”

Meanwhile, another forensics team from Putrajaya is scheduled to arrive at 4pm today.

“The team from Putrajaya will confirm our findings and hypotheses. I’m sure the hypothesis found by our FI staff and Sue tallies,” he added.
