KUCHING, Feb 19: With Kapit being one of the closest point to Nusantara, Kalimantan, Indonesia’s new capital city, Julau Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Larry Sng has proposed the construction of a highway connecting Kapit directly to Nusantara.
He viewed this as a strategic move that could strengthen bilateral ties and unlock the economic potential between the two nations, especially within the Kapit area.
“I propose that Malaysia hold discussions with Indonesia regarding the construction of a road from Kapit that can connect to Nusantara.
“This road not only facilitates movement between the two countries but can also boost trade activities and develop the towns near the border areas, making these towns more dynamic in terms of the economy,” Sng said during his recent debate at the 15th Parliament meeting at Dewan Rakyat.
“I hope the Minister of Works (Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi), who is also the Kapit Member of Parliament, will advocate for this agenda for the benefit of the people and the economic development of the country.
“This will also open up job opportunities and stimulate economic cooperation between the two countries,” he added.
Meanwhile, during his debate, Sng also raised questions about the necessity of constructing a new airport in Tanjung Embang, Samarahan, given the availability of land near the existing Kuching International Airport that could be utilised for potential expansions, such as additional terminals or runways.
“I would like to obtain clarification and justification regarding the plan to relocate the airport to Tanjung Embang Samarahan, while there is still sufficient land available for development and expansion at the existing location,” he pointed out.
He emphasised that international airports such as the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) had expanded its terminals and now KLIA and KLIA 2 share the same runway.
“The relocation of the airport to a new location affects the entire business ecosystem of the surrounding area, including hotels, restaurants, transportation companies, and other businesses that depend on the airport,” he added. – DayakDaily
