KUCHING, March 28: Julau MP Larry Sng has shot down claims that his proposal to grant Bumiputera status to Chinese Sarawakians was politically motivated.
In a Facebook post today, Sng said that the Chinese voters in his constituency made up less than five per cent, adding that Parti Bangsa Malaysia’s (PBM) presence and aspirations are mainly localised in Bumiputera-led rural constituencies.
He said this in response to Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Richard Wee, who described his proposal as such.
He said Wee “may not be able to see the Sarawak to come”, as Sng himself envisages a Sarawak for all Sarawakians to chart their own futures.
“We as a nation shouldn’t be limited by what we have now, but instead aspire to what we can become,” he said.
On March 26, Sng expressed hope that Sarawakians of Chinese descent could be granted Bumiputera status, given their deep-rooted ties to the State, with family histories stretching back over 150 years.
The following day, Free Malaysia Today reported that Wee rejected the proposal, saying that Sarawakians have accepted the existing policy. — DayakDaily
