KUCHING, March 14: About 5,000 people gathered at Padang Merdeka this evening, laying out food mats across the historic field as they prepared to break fast together under the evening sky in the annual Juh Berambeh Sungkei programme.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the programme was organised through a collaboration between his two ministries, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), and several other agencies.

“This year is the fourth time we are organising Juh Berambeh Sungkei at Padang Merdeka. The response has been very encouraging since the first year, and we can see the number of visitors increasing each time,” he told reporters after officiating the event today.

Families and friends gather at Padang Merdeka, laying out mats, setting up the tents and preparing food for a festive iftar at Padang Merdeka in Kuching on Mar 14, 2026.

According to him, the gathering goes beyond Muslims observing iftar, highlighting Sarawak’s diverse and harmonious community as people from different races take part.

“Many university students are here as well, especially those coming from Kota Samarahan, to experience breaking fast together in the city,” he added.

Abdul Karim estimated this year’s turnout was similar to last year’s, around 5,000 people, noting that the good weather helped draw the crowd.

The group Rabbani is performing their popular hits at Juh Berambeh Sungkei, bringing the stage alive at Padang Merdeka on March 14, 2026.

On next year’s plan, he said the programme is expected to continue following strong public support, including similar gatherings held in Sibu, Miri and Kota Samarahan.

“Based on the response over the past years, InsyaAllah (God willing), we will organise it again next year, and I believe it will be even more lively,” he said.

He also thanked DBKU, participating ministries, enforcement agencies, and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for helping ensure the smooth running of the programme.

Meanwhile, Amirul from Kuching said the programme should be continued yearly during Ramadan due to its positive impact on the community.

Amirul and his family are ready to break fast, with a spread of food laid out before them at Padang Merdeka in Kuching on Mar 14, 2026.

“For me, this initiative helps foster stronger ties between Muslims and non-Muslims. Events like this are valuable for the people of Sarawak as they promote harmony and mutual understanding,” he said when interviewed. — DayakDaily
