MIRI, Nov 22: An unemployed man was sentenced to 12 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday, for stealing four packets of chocolates from a supermarket in Senadin.

Magistrate Steve Ritikos meted out the sentence on Syed Zaidnudin Awang Ahmad, 28, after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The accused was charged with stealing four packets of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolates, weighing at 180gm and worth a total of RM34.40, at Everwin Supernarket, Desa Senadin, at 3.11pm on Nov 20.

The offence is framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft , which carries a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.

Syed Zaidnudin, who was not represented, pleaded for a lenient sentence since he is unemployed.

However, the prosecuting officer ASP Mary Ong asked for apt punishment to be handed down.

The court also ordered the jail sentence to run from the date of the arrest. — DayakDaily
