MIRI, Nov 22: Sarawak Transport Ministry is planning an integrated traffic master plan to address traffic congestion in the city.

Its minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said several approaches have been mooted to reduce traffic problem.

A study on Miri’s road management system, which was last conducted in 1997, will be carried out, he added.

“The Miri road management system is outdated and we need to come up with a new approach and master plan.

“This especially considering that Miri has been chosen as the smart city pilot project in Sarawak,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting with the relevant authorities here today.

For a start, Lee said the city’s ageing traffic lights will be upgraded to meet the requirements for the smart city system.

He added that the integrated road management system will ease traffic flow and improve the commuting situation across the city.

“We want to have a more structured and systematic urban traffic system,” the minister continued.
