KUCHING, June 10: The Magistrate’s Court here today fixed July 9 for further mention of a murder case involving a police officer accused of fatally shooting a man at Jalan Stephen Yong in April this year.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan granted the adjournment to allow the prosecution more time to obtain pending forensic and chemical reports.

During the proceedings, Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin informed the court that the investigating officer had indicated the ballistic and post-mortem reports would take approximately two months to complete.

However, lawyer Russell Lim, representing the accused, Genesis Nitchell David Reddy, requested an earlier date, citing public interest and the high-profile nature of the case.

In response, the court maintained the July 9 date and ordered that the accused be further remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison pending the next mention.

According to the charge, the accused is being charged with the murder of 34-year-old Muhammad Zaki Iderus by shooting him at Jalan Stephen Yong on April 26, 2025.

The charge is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty or, if not sentenced to death, imprisonment between 30 and 40 years, along with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

In addition to Lim, the accused is also represented by lawyers Brendan Ting and Zoe Chan.

It was previously reported that on the morning of April 26, two men arrived at the Batu Kawa Police Station at around 5.30am, claiming their friend had been shot while passing through Jalan Stephen Yong.

It was also made known to the media that the two men were with the victim in the car and brought both the car and their friend to the station.

The victim was identified as a passenger and had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. — DayakDaily
