KUCHING, April 8: An allocation of RM2.5 million has been approved by the federal government to improve the drainage system in the Mile 9 Jalan Kuching-Serian area.

According to Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, some 15 houses in the area have experienced flooding for the past few years during heavy rainfall, where water levels reach about three feet high.

“The project will start immediately and is expected to be completed within seven or eight months, or perhaps less,” he said during a press conference during a site visit with Public Works Department (JKR) officers today.

Lo elaborated that the project’s starting point is at Taman Emas and passes through Taman Paradise.

Meanwhile, he said that RM480 million has been approved for a flyover project at Mile 8 Jalan Kuching-Serian.

Lo said the project is still in the process of obtaining siting approval and the preliminary engineering design phase.

He added that a process is underway to appoint a consultant for the project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area, especially during peak hours.

When asked when the project would commence, Lo expressed confidence that it would start in less than two years.

Lo also thanked Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi for approving the project.
