KUCHING, Sept 19: Local authorities and elected representatives are called to step up following yesterday’s heavy rainfall which caused many parts of Kuching to be inundated in flash flood water.
Michael Kong, special assistant to Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen of Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) said yesterday’s heavy rainfall caused various parts of Kuching to experience flash floods, including Jalan Durian Burung, where water levels rose by up to one foot.
In a press statement today, Kong said he had the opportunity to meet with some affected residents to better understand their concerns and explore potential solutions.
“One glaring issue we identified was the significant amount of litter clogging our secondary drains which are maintained by the local council. This indicates a failure on the part of the local council to ensure regular maintenance and cleaning of these vital drainage systems.
“I will be reaching out to the MBKS (Kuching South City Council) to demand immediate action on this matter, emphasising the urgency of maintaining our drains to prevent future flooding incidents,” said Kong. — DayakDaily
