PULAU BRUIT, Jan 11: The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has been urged to consider adding more ferries along the Batang Paloh and Batang Igan routes to meet the growing transportation needs while the two bridges are under construction.

In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo emphasised that although the Batang Lassa Bridge has significantly improved transportation for residents, ferry services remain crucial in other areas to accommodate rising demand.

“Ferry services continue to play an essential role, particularly along the Batang Paloh and Batang Igan routes, where traffic congestion is expected to increase, especially during peak hours.

“Both bridges are currently under construction and will soon be completed, further easing congestion and enhancing regional accessibility,” he said.

Aidel made these remarks during the pre-launch ceremony of the Batang Lassa Bridge, where he represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on Thursday (Jan 9).

The Batang Lassa Bridge, a key infrastructure project, has dramatically improved transportation for residents of Daro district and Pulau Bruit, providing a vital link across the Batang Lassa River.

He expressed gratitude to elected representatives, particularly those from coastal areas, for their tireless efforts since 2014 to bring these infrastructure projects to fruition.

The completion of the Batang Lassa Bridge also marks the end of the Muara Lassa Ferry service, which had been in operation for several decades.

“This is a testament to the dedication of elected representatives who fought for this project nearly 10 years ago.

“This infrastructure development is greatly improving the daily lives of locals, providing faster travel and unlocking new economic opportunities,” he added.

The event was also attended by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi, Tanjong Manis MP Yusuf Abd Wahab, Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad, and other officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development and JKR Sarawak. — DayakDaily
