KUCHING, Feb 11: The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) is currently reviewing the estimated damage to infrastructure caused by the recent floods in the State.
Federal Minister of Works, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, revealed that the damage is significant due to the extraordinary scale of the flooding.
“There have been reports of infrastructure damage caused by the floods in Sarawak, and this time, the impact is extensive.
“This was an unusual flood, with exceptionally heavy rainfall, leading to numerous landslides.
The estimated cost of damages is substantial, and we are still refining the figures,” he said as quoted by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) after a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.
He added that Sarawak now requires special allocations, particularly from the federal government, to repair and rebuild the damaged infrastructure.
“There are existing funds from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
“However, we also need to engage with the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Finance to secure additional allocations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nanta stated that the courtesy visit was also aimed at briefing Abang Johari on the implementation of development projects in the State.
According to him, the ministry sought input from Abang Johari on improving project execution to ensure timely completion.
“There are projects at various stages—some have been approved, while others are in progress.
“For those facing issues such as delays, we are working on the solutions,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
