SIBU, July 22: An 18-year-old Iban maiden, Jessica Ajik David captured the Kumang title at the Borneo Dayak Cultural Festival (BDCF) 2023 last night.
A jubilant Jessica later said she was surprised to have won.
“Am surprised to be crowned Kumang as other girls were equally good,” said Jessica with her family by her side after receiving her prizes.
She brought home RM5,000 along with a crown, sash, trophy, hamper and a bouquet of flowers.
The title of ‘Lulong’ or runner-up was awarded to Clara Amanda Buyong who is RM3,000 richer. She also collected a sash, trophy and hamper.
Meanwhile, Angelina Rani Gawan took the ‘Selinggar Matahari’ title or third place which came with a RM2,000 cash prize along with a sash, trophy and hamper.
The fourth to 10th place winners, namely Marenny Radin, Caroline Lika Undi, Mitchelle Linjah Guntor, Kartina Bagan, Sherlingtia Mogan, Amelia Tina Naong and Maryline Dyna Alexius each received a consolation prize of RM500.
A total of 10 participants participated in the competition this time, each wearing the traditional Iban ‘ngepan’ clothes.
The competition was held in conjunction with the BCF 2023 Dayak Stage Night which was officiated by Temenggong Stanley Gramong Bandar representing Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.
Also present were BCF 2023 Dayak Stage Night Organizer Chairman Councilor Augustine Merikan and Sibu Municipal Council Deputy Chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Rosely. — DayakDaily
