KUCHING, March 23: Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee has suggested that the traditional ferry service, also known as a water taxi or ‘bot tambang’, in his constituency be preserved despite the opening of the new bridge.

In a Suara Sarawak report, he said that such services remain relevant and should be preserved for future generations to appreciate as part of Jepak’s history.

“Although this bridge is a major catalyst for economic growth and convenience for the residents, I believe ferry operators can continue to operate as usual.

“We can see in Sarawak River, Kuching, where the ferry service continues to operate until today,” he said when met after the opening of the Bintulu-Jepak Bridge today.

He added that the continuation of this heritage would remind the younger generation of what Jepak was like before the bridge’s existence.

Furthermore, he said that it would not only preserve Jepak’s identity but could also become another tourist attraction.

At the same time, Iskandar also emphasised the importance of ensuring that new facilities like the bridge are not misused. — DayakDaily
