KUCHING, Nov 29: A 28-year-old man, Mohamad Yusri, has been sentenced to two weeks in jail and fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court after assaulting his 18-year-old ex-wife in a fit of jealousy over her social media interactions.
Yusri pleaded guilty to charges under Section 323 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing hurt to his former spouse.
The offence, committed at a house in Taman Serapi Jaya around 2.37am on November 26, carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi ordered that the prison sentence begin from the date of arrest on November 27.
She also ruled that Yusri serve an additional four months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
According to the case facts, a disagreement between the couple escalated, leading Yusri to physically assault his ex-wife. The investigation revealed that he used a smartphone to strike her left arm and leg and even choked her during the altercation, causing minor injuries.
The couple had divorced in early September, but Yusri continued visiting under the pretext of checking on their child. However, these visits frequently ended in arguments, with this particular incident culminating in physical violence.
Yusri reportedly became enraged after discovering that his ex-wife had been communicating with another man on social media.
Despite being given multiple chances by his ex-wife to change his behaviour, he persisted in his aggressive actions.
The victim sought medical attention at a hospital, where doctors confirmed she had sustained minor tissue injuries.
The prosecution, led by ASP Mohd Adzmei Ahmad, detailed the events during the trial. Yusri, who was not represented by legal counsel, admitted his actions and accepted the court’s judgment. — DayakDaily
