KUCHING, Jan 21: The Japanese method of constructing underground bunkers has been proposed as a potential solution to develop a dry pond at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to mitigate flooding without compromising its heritage structures.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised the urgency of expediting the project to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services at the Sarawak’s main medical facility, which provides 80 to 90 per cent of medical and specialist care in Sarawak.

ā€œWe cannot allow medical services to be disrupted by floods. How many lives depend on the hospital every day? This is not merely about flooding or heritage value alone,ā€ he stressed.

He added that efforts to address the issue are progressing, with Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel chairing a recent meeting involving all relevant stakeholders.

Dr Sim made these remarks during a press conference at the launch of the Chinese New Year 2025 Fire Safety Campaign Programme organised by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya, today.

The campaign featured a childrenā€™s drawing competition and a flag-off ceremony to promote fire safety awareness ahead of the festive season. Dr Sim also presented prizes to competition winners.

Bomba Sarawak director Jamri Masran and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng were among those present. ā€” DayakDaily
