PUTRAJAYA, Jan 10: Japan is committed to working with Sarawak in the development of various renewable energy sectors in the region, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a TVS news report, the prime minister explained that the assurance was given by his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba during a meeting involving the leaders of both countries today.

Anwar added that the matter would be worked on immediately with the next meeting scheduled for May in Tokyo (Japan) or Kuala Lumpur.

“(We also received assurances from) Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to make this collaboration a success.

“The new initiative (in this renewable energy sector) by Sarawak will involve Petros collaborating with PETRONAS to work on alternative energy and hydrogen,” he said.

He said this at a press conference with Ishiba after the Malaysia-Japan Bilateral Meeting at the Perdana Putra Complex today.

Meanwhile, Ishiba said that apart from the hydrogen sector, Japan also wants to establish cooperation in the development of ammonia and power generation for gas turbines with Sarawak.

Ishiba said this is to strengthen Japan’s energy security and efforts towards decarbonisation.

“The Japanese government wants to move forward through this cooperation in the ammonia and power generation sectors for gas turbines, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), in addition to hydrogen and oil and gas,” he said.

Ishiba is currently on a two-day official visit to Malaysia which began yesterday (Jan 9).
