KUCHING, Aug 20: The Japan Malaysia Association (JMA) is targeting the planting of more than one million trees in Sarawak this year in hopes of building the younger generation’s capacity on the importance of rainforest regeneration.

In a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, this was said by JMA vice chairperson Haruko Arimura, who led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.

Speaking to reporters after the courtesy call, Arimura said the tree-planting programme is part of their effort to encourage actions that are beneficial not only to Sarawak but the country as well.

“This is also to foster good relations between Malaysia and Japan,” she said.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari also received a second courtesy call from Sarawak Chinese Association (SCA) led by Miri City mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

The purpose of the visit was to invite Abang Johari to officiate at the ‘Taste of Borneo’ carnival, which is scheduled to be held from Oct 30 to Nov 10 in Miri.

“This event is unique and will involve 20 ethnic groups in Miri to showcase not just food but also many cultural aspects.

“It is also one of the ways to unite all ethnic groups through food and culture,” he said. — DayakDaily
