KUCHING, May 2: Tourism, Arts, and Culture (Motac) Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has lambasted Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak commissioner Jofri Jaraiee after the latter claimed that the proposed opening of a casino in Sarawak would do more harm than good.

Tiong pointed out that the PAS leader is notorious for using religious justifications to gain popularity by making statements that could potentially threaten the peace among the nation’s diverse religious and ethnic communities.

“Such actions are extremely dangerous, as they cause community division and make it difficult to work towards economic development in Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Tiong continued by stating that, as a Sarawakian, he bears a heavy responsibility as the Motac minister, who also plays a role in the development of Sarawak’s multicultural society.

“My stance on the proposed development of an amusement park, golf course, and casino in Borneo Highlands is therefore clear, and it is up to the regional government, led by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, as stated by Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“I am confident that the existence of such developments in Borneo Highlands will promote Sarawak tourism, create numerous job opportunities, drive the surrounding economic benefits, and generate additional revenue for Sarawak,” he explained.

He went on to say that once the plan is confirmed and implemented, basic facilities and tourist attractions in the surrounding area will be improved as well.

“Why should it be prevented or opposed if it can form a good and stimulating economic cycle for the benefit of the people?” he added.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, emphasised that the proposed projects are for the future development of the people in Sarawak, particularly to fulfil the rural community’s dream of securing basic facilities.

“If anyone is concerned that the existence of a casino will lead to social problems, then provide appropriate oversight, such as permitting foreigners to enter the casino at any time.

“If they are locals, they must comply with specific rules to enter the casino, in addition to any other conditions deemed necessary,” he asserted.

“Many Middle Eastern countries are gradually moving towards moderation. There are upscale casinos all over the Middle East, for example, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host Miss World 2023 this year.
