Internal probe into Daro school safety compliance after student dies in electrocution incident

KUCHING, May 8: Sarawak Education Department has initiated an internal investigation to examine compliance with safety aspects at a secondary school in Daro following a fatal electrocution incident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Form Four student.

In a statement yesterday (May 7), the department expressed deep sorrow over the death of Fahrin Jumandy Abdullah and extended condolences to his family, praying that his soul be placed among the faithful and that his family be granted strength in facing the tragedy.

“The immediate focus is to provide full assistance and support to the bereaved family, while also ensuring the welfare of the injured student who is currently receiving treatment,” the department said, adding that it hopes for the student’s swift recovery.

Following the incident, the affected area at the school has been cordoned off as a safety precaution. Students, teachers, and all school personnel have been strictly prohibited from entering the area until it is officially confirmed to be safe.

The department noted that relevant authorities are also conducting a separate investigation into the incident.

In the incident on May 6, a male student died after he was believed to have been electrocuted while taking ablution water at the secondary school.

Matu Daro District Police chief, Deputy Superintendent Rahim Mihos, said the incident involved three male secondary school students.

He said one of the victims, a 16-year-old Form Four student, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel. Another victim, a 15-year-old Form Three student, was rushed to Daro Hospital for treatment before being referred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sibu Hospital.
