MIRI, Dec 24: To keep road users safe, it is crucial to instil a traffic safety culture amongst motorists since human negligence has become a major contributor to accidents.

According to Senadin assemblyman Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, a study showed that 65 per cent of accidents happen due to human negligence.

“This (human negligence) endangers road users; thus, we must focus on instilling traffic safety culture amongst motorists to reduce fatalities,” he said today.

Lee was met after distributing 300 goody bags containing a helmet, safety sticker, and a reflective jacket during a road safety programme held in front of a petrol station in Permyjaya.

The Miri Divisional Road Safety Council organised the annual event with the State Ministry of Transport.

“Secure yourselves properly with seat belts or helmets when travelling, and not just when you see policemen around you.

“Today’s focus was on motorcyclists since the accident rates involving them are very high,” Lee said.

He also reminded motorcyclists to wear their helmets properly for safety purposes. — DayakDaily
