Indonesian youth gets 8 months’ jail for entering country illegally, participating in illegal online gambling

KUCHING, Feb 14: An Indonesian man was sentenced to a total of eight months in jail after he pleaded guilty to charges of illegally entering Malaysia and being involved in illegal online gambling activities.

Wendy William, 20, from Singkawang was charged in the Sessions Court and the Magistrate’s Court respectively.


He was arrested by a team of police personnel at about 2.50pm on January 17, at a premises along Jalan Tun Jugah.

The police team had conducted a raid on the said premises which was suspected to be used as a call centre for illegal gambling activities.

Upon investigation by the police, the premises was found to be used for illegal gambling activities and the accused was the operator of the premises and had failed to show any valid documents to prove that he entered Malaysia legally.

The accused was charged under Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and punishable under Section 6(3) of the same Act.

He was sentenced to imprisonment of four months under this Act.

He was also charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for involvement in illegal gambling activities.
