Indonesian pleads guilty to overstaying, involvement in illegal online gambling

KUCHING, July 28: An Indonesian man was sentenced to 4 months’ imprisonment for overstaying in Malaysia and fined RM1,500 for involvement in illegal online gambling.

Rudwanto, 22, pleaded guilty to the two charges at the Sessions Court and the Magistrate’s Court respectively.


He was charged with staying in Malaysia after the expiration of his social visit pass at a mini store in Jalan Kuching-Serian, at about 6pm on July 14.

He was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the 1959/63 Immigration Act and punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act before Sessions Court Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd@Mohd Yusof.

Mohd Taufik convicted him as charged and sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment.

Rudwanto was also charged for involvement in illegal online gambling activity at the same mini store in Jalan Kuching-Serian, at about 6pm on July 14.

He was charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for involvement in illegal gambling activities.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali convicted him as charged and sentenced him to a fine of RM1,500 or in default to five months’ imprisonment and ordered the accused be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence in the country.

According to the brief facts of the case, a police team raided the mini store as it was suspected to be used for illegal online gambling activities, and arrested the accused. — DayakDaily
