KUCHING, June 20: An Indonesian convict who escaped from Tapah Police Station but was caught soon after was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here.
The Magistrate’s Court here passed the sentenced on the Indonesian man, Kevin, 23, who escaped from Tapah Police Station on June 12.
He pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
This particular section covers those convicted who attempt to, or escapes from lawful custody.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali convicted him as charged and sentenced him to one year of imprisonment, effective from the date of arrest. She also ordered Kelvin to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail sentence.
Kelvin was found to have escaped from the lockup at Tapah Police Station after being remanded by the police officer at approximately 12.40 pm on June 12.
According to the brief facts of the case, during the incident, the police were distributing lunch to the suspects detained in the lockup when two Indonesian convicts, namely Kelvin and Bony, suddenly ran away from the lockup.
On June 15, Kelvin was caught by the police near a fishing pond at Mile 22 with the help of the public, who informed the police via WhatsApp that an unknown man was asking for food. — DayakDaily
