KUCHING, Dec 12: Two cases of illegal underground power tapping were recently uncovered at Jalan Kapor and Jalan Stampin Tengah during an operation by Sarawak Energy, through its operational and retail arm, Syarikat Sesco Berhad.
Investigations by Sesco’s meter inspection team, part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and combat electricity theft, revealed that the perpetrators had concealed direct tapping cables underground to bypass electricity meters and steal power.
In a media release today, Sarawak Energy explained that, in both cases, the direct tapping cables were hidden in concrete outside residential houses near the meter boxes.
Investigations are being carried out under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries penalties of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.
Sarawak Energy highlighted the severe safety risks posed by underground power theft, as the unauthorised setup does not meet Sesco’s stringent safety standards.
Such illegal connections can lead to electrical fires, electrocution, and damage to infrastructure. They can also destabilise the electricity supply, disrupting nearby communities.
The utility company remains dedicated to combating electricity theft across the state and will continue working with relevant authorities to ensure that offenders are prosecuted.
Sarawak Energy’s meter inspection teams, equipped with advanced tools, are well-trained to detect and address various forms of power theft.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities involving electricity theft to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports will be kept strictly confidential. — DayakDaily
