ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup opening ceremony to be held tomorrow

KUCHING: The opening ceremony for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup will take place tomorrow morning at the new Borneo Cricket Ground.

According to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the ceremony is expected to be officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

At the same time, Abang Johari will also officiate the ground breaking ceremony for the Borneo Cricket Ground which has been completed in just five months at a cost of RM1.5 million.

Also scheduled to be present at the ceremony are Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Patron of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA), Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Jaafar.

Rehearsals for the ceremony went smoothly today, with meticulous preparations carried out by various government agencies and the ICC at the Borneo Cricket Ground.

Preparations were also made throughout the Borneo Cricket Ground for the first match between the Nigerian and Samoan teams which is expected to take place tomorrow at 10.30am.

Sixteen teams from around the world are set take part in 41 match events across Malaysia.

For Sarawak, according to ICC, fans can witness live matches between Samoa and Nigeria, while New Zealand is set to meet South Africa in Group C action.

Sarawak will host 10 matches with the preliminary round of Group C involving teams from New Zealand, South Africa, Nigeria, and Samoa as well as a ‘Super Six’ match involving the best teams from groups B and C.
