KUCHING, July 30: Former Padungan assemblywoman Datuk Lily Yong today dismissed suggestions that she is retiring, declaring that she will continue her journey in public service and do more meaningful work for the people.
Speaking at the launch of two books chronicling her life and public service, Yong was responding to remarks by Sarawak Arts and Culture Research Institute (SACRI) president Datuk David Teng Lung Chi, who asked whether the occasion marked the end of her journey or the beginning of her retirement.
“Just now Datuk David Teng asked whether this is the end of the journey, or whether I am going to retire from now on.
“To you all, I’ll say I will not. To some people, they may not be very happy. I will not.
“I’ll continue my journey, and I think we’ll do more meaningful things for the people, definitely,” she said during the launch ceremony held at Theatre Hotel here.
The event saw the launch of two books documenting Yong’s life and career, titled 風中百合 or ‘Captain of Her Own Journey’ by Amelyn Bong, and ‘Lily Yong Lee Lee: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges’ by Leonard Sabu.
Among those present were Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Dato Dr Simon Peter Poh Hoon Seng, Yong’s husband Francis Ong, SACRI president Datuk David Teng Lung Chi and Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Dato Sri Richard Wee Liang Chiat. — DayakDaily
