MIRI, July 30: A 56-year-old boat owner sustained first-degree burns to his cheek and right arm while attempting to put out a fire that completely destroyed his fishing boat behind a furniture shop here today.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Miri Central reported that the man suffered the injuries before the arrival of firefighters and was later taken to the hospital by family members for treatment.
Bomba Miri Central responded to the emergency at 5.30pm and a team of firefighters from the station, assisted by personnel from Bomba Lutong, was immediately dispatched to the scene.
The blaze involved a fishing vessel measuring approximately 60 feet in length and 14 feet in width, which was reported to have been completely destroyed in the incident.
Firefighters carried out firefighting operations using foam suppression methods to control the blaze involving fuel on board the vessel.
The operation involved the use of one 100-foot hose line, one nozzle, the fire engine pump and water supply from the fire engine’s tank. Firefighters also deployed 12 drums of foam during the firefighting operation.
The operation was led by PBK II Jukernain Jon, with senior operational command by PKPgB Nicholas Belulin, chief of the Bomba Miri Central station.
The fire was brought under control at 6.50pm. — DayakDaily
