KUCHING, Oct 30: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has clarified that his frequent on-the-ground visits are strictly in his capacity as mayor, not as a prelude to stand as a candidate in the next election.
He explained that MBKS’s focus begins with Padungan, where the council is working to establish a successful model of its development initiatives, which will later expand to other areas such as Icom Square, Pending, Kenyalang, and Batu Lintang.
“This is a step-by-step approach. So, it doesn’t mean that if I’m going down to Pending, then I will stand (as a candidate) in Pending or when I go to the other side, I will stand in Batu Lintang,” he told reporters after the handover of the upgraded Bintawa Hawker Centre and Wet Market at the site today.
He was responding a reporter’s query on rumours that he might stand for the Pending seat in the next Sarawak election.
In the 2021 Sarawak election, newcomer Wee contested in Padungan under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ticket, securing 3,488 votes but falling short by 1,198 votes to unseat the incumbent assemblyman, Chong Chieng Jen of the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Prompted further by the reporter, Wee stressed that he does not want to make any predictions on the election as his role as mayor is his priority.
“We (MBKS) don’t serve because we want to be a candidate (in elections). We serve because we are in that position (as a council).
“Our intention is to make sure that during our term of councillorship, we are doing our best and people will remember us for what we have done for them,” he added.
He noted that many other rumours will emerge given that Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) election is approaching.
“But let’s ignore the rumours. I’m not here to fight for positions,” he asserted. – DayakDaily
