KUCHING, July 13: A 59-year-old man who had been living on the streets of Taman Riverview in Pending for nearly a month has received assistance to return to his hometown, thanks to the efforts of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau.

According to the bureau, they have received reports regarding the man, Rantai Sagai, who they learned used to work at a welding company in Kuching before he became unemployed.

Although he has four children—the oldest being 30 years old and the youngest 20—the bureau was unable to get a hold on them as Rantai has lost contact with them and couldn’t recall their phone numbers.

“Through our conversation, we learned that he might have suffered from amnesia,” said the bureau.

Rantai was found to be in fit condition, albeit with a limping walk due to leg pain or injuries, and he said he sometimes felt pain on the left side of his head. He also showed the medication prescribed to him from the Sarikei health clinic.

Although the bureau offered to bring him for a medical check-up, he refused, and when asked what he needed, he said he just wanted to ‘balik kampung’ (return to his hometown) but was unable to do so as he did not have any money.

After learning this, the bureau assisted him in purchasing a bus ticket to Sarikei. Community leader Kapitan Chung Chong has also helped him to arrange transport from Taman Riverview to Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal.

Before leaving, Rantai was treated to breakfast and lunch was bought for him, as he told them he had not eaten for the past two days. At the same time, tokens were also given to him.

“We wish Rantai well and a safe journey to Sarikei.” — DayakDaily
