KUCHING, Oct 29: i-CATS is now known as Sarawak Tun Openg University of Technology (TAHOTECH), following approval by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, marking a new chapter in the institution’s development as a full-fledged university.

Abang Johari said the new name, logo and corporate identity represented more than a change in branding, reflecting the university’s strategic direction in developing highly skilled talent to support Sarawak’s industrial growth and technology-driven economy.

“We want this university to be a higher education institution that not only excels in producing knowledgeable and highly skilled graduates, but also develops holistic and well-rounded human capital characterised by integrity, good moral values and a deep respect for ethics and propriety in the pursuit and advancement of knowledge.

“Sarawak’s progress must be driven by a generation that not only masters knowledge and technology, but also possesses maturity of thought, strong character and a sense of responsibility towards society.

“This balance is fundamental to nurturing a competitive, visionary generation capable of leading Sarawak’s sustainable development,” he said in a press release issued by TAHOTECH today.

According to TAHOTECH, the university’s new identity comes as Sarawak seeks to strengthen higher education, talent development, research and technological innovation to support its transition towards a knowledge- and technology-based economy.

TAHOTECH has been selected as the official abbreviation for Sarawak Tun Openg University of Technology, signalling the institution’s ambition to become a leading centre for high-level skills development, impactful research and cutting-edge technological innovation.

The announcement follows the Ministry of Higher Education’s recognition of i-CATS as a full-fledged university on Oct 20, 2026, marking a milestone in efforts to expand the role of the Sarawak government-owned institution in human capital development and research.

MoHE Minister Dato Sri Zambry Abdul Kadir presented the recognition letter during a courtesy call on Abang Johari at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex, with Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, MoHE director-general Datuk Prof Dr Azlinda Azman, i-CATS vice chancellor Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, and Yayasan Sarawak director Datu Mohamad Junaidi Mohidin in attendance.

The transformation is also aligned with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which sets out Sarawak’s broader development aspirations.

TAHOTECH’s new logo combines elements of Sarawak’s cultural heritage with design features inspired by natural resources, science and modern technology.

It symbolises an institution rooted in local identity while maintaining a forward-looking outlook as it seeks to embrace future advancements and expand its reach on the global stage. — DayakDaily
