He was unrepresented. The offence carries up to 14 years’ jail, and offenders may also be fined or whipped.

The court heard that the 43-year-old victim was walking with her mother along Lorong Demak Bayu at about 2pm on Oct 21 when a man on a motorcycle rode up and yanked the older woman’s handbag from her arm.

The two struggled, and the mother fell, sustaining minor injuries and a cut to her right hand. The man then grabbed the daughter’s bag and fled.

The haul included RM180 in cash, two smartphones, an identity card, a driving licence, an ATM card and a prepaid card, bringing the victim’s losses to about RM3,000.

A police report led to Mohammad Shafiq’s arrest on Oct 24. Officers seized some of the victim’s documents from him, as well as clothing, a set of keys and the motorcycle used in the crime.

The victim was able to identify her belongings among the recovered items, and closed-circuit television footage from the scene captured the robbery.

Police checks showed he had four previous drug-related convictions and seven other criminal records.
