KUCHING, Aug 18: Statues of a 16-foot tall ‘Ghost King’ and a 21-foot long ‘Dharma Boat’ will be burned as part of the Hungry Ghost Festival ritual at the Sarawak River near Isthmus Bridge tomorrow (Aug 19).
The paper statues, known to be the largest in Kuching, were prepared by the Kuching Zonghe Association, the organiser of the Yu Lan Assembly which takes place from Aug 17 to 19.
Other offerings include a number of 6-foot tall horses, 13-foot tall and five-foot wide gold and silver mountains, all made of paper.
The ‘Ghost King’ or Zhong Kui, is a folk hero who fights ghosts and hunts demons in Chinese mythology.
The opening of the Yu Lan Assembly was held yesterday (Aug 17), attended by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai who represented Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, as well as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
According to a news report by TVS, Kuching Zonghe Association invites believers and members of the public to attend the ritual tomorrow night, after the water lantern ceremony at 5pm. — DayakDaily
