KUCHING, Sept 15: The Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) are still searching for answers after hundreds of dead fish were found floating along the Sarawak River waterfront, with samples from four locations now undergoing further laboratory analysis.
SRB chairman Dr Safiee Ahmad said further investigations were being conducted with the Sarawak Agriculture Department’s Inland Fisheries Division and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).
“Checks were conducted on several water quality parameters, particularly dissolved oxygen (O₂) and ammonia (NH₃), to obtain initial indications of possible changes in water quality.
“However, the actual cause of the fish deaths has yet to be identified, and laboratory analysis results are still pending,” he said when contacted by TVS yesterday (Sept 14).
Safiee said the Sarawak Agriculture Department and NREB collected samples of the dead fish and water on Sept 12 and 14 from four locations, namely Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik, Bintawa Industrial Estate, and the barrage area, before being sent to laboratories for further analysis.
“The field investigation involved five SRB enforcement personnel, three personnel from the Sarawak Agriculture Department, and three NREB enforcement personnel,” he said.
Safiee said the laboratory analysis results on water quality and the cause of the fish deaths would be an important reference in determining the next course of action.
He added that he would announce any further findings once the laboratory analysis results were received. — DayakDaily
