KUCHING, June 9: A shortage of hotel accommodations during international-level events in Sarawak is a challenge but a “good problem” as it indicates that the tourism sector is recovering.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah highlighted this in view that hotels, especially mid-tier accommodations in Kuching city recorded a surge in room bookings ahead of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2023 on June 23 to 25.
“Most mid-range hotels are booked but I believe there are still occupancy for budget and high-end hotels. Damai is definitely fully booked.
“I am very happy to see this happen as it is a positive sign that the tourism sector is thriving following the complete reopening of borders. This (shortage of accommodation) is a good problem because it shows that the industry is recovering,” he told a press conference after officiating the RWMF Sponsors Aprreciation Day held at a hotel here today.
Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor was also present.
Abdul Karim acknowledged that the accommodation availability often poses a challenge during international-level events.
However, he emphasised the positive aspect of this issue, as it will greatly benefit the budget hotel, high-end hotels as well as alternative accommodation providers, such as homestays and AirBnb accommodations.
“This situation would also indirectly attracts investors to come in to provide the (hospitality) services needed in Sarawak.
“We need the private sector to get involved in addressing the hotels or accommodation needs, especially during major events in Sarawak,” he added. — DayakDaily
