KUCHING, Aug 17: The Sarawak government is providing robust support to the Federal government’s efforts in resolving statelessness, particularly in reaching remote areas of the state.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Minister of Home Affairs Dato’ Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasised that Sarawak has been instrumental in offering substantial logistical assistance to his ministry, especially for operations in rural and hard-to-reach locations.

“If we need a helicopter, they will provide one to transport us to the location,” Saifuddin said during a press conference after presenting a progress report on identity document issues to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia.

The report covered the ongoing efforts and accomplishments of the Special Task Force Unit Committee, co-chaired by Abang Johari and Saifuddin, specifically established to address statelessness in the region.

Saifuddin noted that the committee operates on two levels: the main committee and a subcommittee, which includes Sarawak Minister for Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato’ Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

“We have been operational since last year, and today I presented the results, detailing the identity documents that have been received, the number currently being processed, and the number of applications still pending,” he added.

The task force’s work is vital in ensuring that affected individuals, especially those in remote areas, are identified and provided with necessary documentation. — DayakDaily
