KUCHING, Oct 11: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has emphasised the pivotal role of homegrown brands like H&L in contributing to the State’s nation-building efforts, encouraging local entrepreneurs to continue expanding their businesses across the region.
Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, highlighted how H&L’s journey from a humble shop in Batu Kawah to a prominent retail chain epitomises the success of Sarawak’s economic strategy.
“Building our own brands and identities is essential for Sarawak’s long-term growth. This is what being an ‘Anak Sarawak’ is all about – uniting under a shared vision to create a prosperous and harmonious future for all,” he said during his speech at the soft launch of H&L Xtra at Kota Padawan Mall here.
He added that as Sarawak approaches its 2030 development goals, it is vital for local businesses to step up and embrace their role in strengthening the State’s economic foundation.
Dr Sim further commended H&L’s progress and adaptability, noting that the retail giant has transformed significantly over the years.
From its beginnings as a small family-run business, H&L has evolved into a major player in the Sarawakian retail sector, boasting multiple outlets, including concept stores like H&L Extra.
“The growth of H&L not only reflects the changing consumer behaviour and needs in Sarawak but also symbolises the confidence of our people in building homegrown enterprises that can compete at both regional and national levels,” the minister remarked.
Furthermore, Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, shared that the new H&L Extra concept store in Kota Padawan is a perfect example of how local businesses are adapting to the needs of Sarawak’s diverse consumer base.
The store has sections dedicated to specific customer segments, such as budget-friendly product sections and special promotions, reflecting the State’s emphasis on providing affordable essentials in the face of rising living costs.
“This innovative approach ensures that even during challenging economic times, Sarawakians have access to a wide range of products that cater to various budgets,” Dr Sim noted.
Looking ahead, Dr Sim expressed confidence that H&L’s continued success will serve as a catalyst for other local businesses to expand their operations beyond Kuching and eventually to other parts of Malaysia.
H&L marked a significant milestone today with the soft opening of its 15th outlet, H&L Xtra, at Kota Padawan Mall.
The launch, officiated by Dr Sim, comes as the second H&L Xtra store in Sarawak, revitalising a long-vacant space.
The new outlet aims to enhance the community’s shopping experience, offering a diverse range of products including fresh produce, electronics, and furniture.
“Our goal is to ‘Save Money, Live Better’ for all Sarawakians,” said Bong Kuet Foong, Chairman of H&L, in his welcoming speech.
The store also features The Magic Oven, offering halal baked goods and Menu Rahmah fast food priced at just RM3.99.
To mark the soft opening, H&L Xtra has rolled out a series of exclusive promotions over the next three days.
Customers can enjoy discounts on selected items, and participate in the ‘Buy More, Earn More Points’ loyalty programme, which aims to reward shoppers for their continued support.
These special offers are designed to provide additional value to customers as a gesture of appreciation for their loyalty over the years.
