Hidup urges authorities to install street lights at accident-prone Lorong Stakan Perdana 3A junction

KUCHING, March 23: The junction at Lorong Stakan Perdana 3A which motorcyclist Nur Faisal Fitri Hasbi met his fate needs the urgent installation of street lights as it is an accident-prone spot.

In a press statement, Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Programme (Hidup) president George Young Si-Ricord Jr who paid his respects at Nur Faisal Fitri’s wake, revealed the latter died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle at the junction of Lorong Stakan Perdana at around 8.30pm recently.

While there, George also visited the site of the accident where he learnt from residents there that their previous pleas to the local authorities to install street lighting had been unsuccessful after several vehicle accidents at the spot.

“Without any street lighting to improve visibility, this road junction remains a dangerous spot with accidents waiting to happen especially in pitch darkness and rainy weather,” said George.

Looking at the debris left by the accident, George expressed his frustration.

“Such a needless waste of a young man’s life when it could have been prevented by road lighting or even other road safety measures which reduce traffic speed and improve visibility and vigilance,” he said.

George strongly urged the local authorities to take immediate action before more lives are lost.

“When people’s lives are at stake, I call upon the local authorities responsible not to delay any further. One life lost is too many. There are many ways to make that junction safer by reducing the risks or hazards.

“Apart from streetlights, they can also install high visibility signs, speed reducing strips, ‘stop’ signs or even traffic lights. There are many examples of these in the city.

“Whatever the costs surely it’s nothing to compared to the loss of life for villagers of Kpg Stakan Melayu, especially the family of Allahyarham adik Nur Faisal Fitri,” said George. — DayakDaily
