KUCHING, April 21: Determined to leave no street in darkness, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap is pushing for full completion of a constituency-wide street lighting initiative under the 2022 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), which has already reached 93 per cent completion.

With only RM69,184.10 remaining from the RM1 million allocation, Yap conducted a site visit today with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SESCO) officers to identify strategic locations for the project’s final phase.

The visit included the T-junction of Jalan Sungai Tapang, where he was joined by community leaders Penghulu Lai Boon Khee and Kapitan Lee Tho Fung.

“Lighting our streets is not just about infrastructure—it’s about safeguarding our families, boosting nighttime economic activity, and fostering community confidence,” he said in a press release.

The project has been executed in three meticulously planned phases, which have already brought street lighting to major villages, residential roads, and military zones throughout the Kota Sentosa constituency.

Phase 1 involved lighting installations in several villages, including Kampung Sungai Tapang, Kampung Stutong, and Kampung Stampin Baru. These areas now benefit from improved visibility and safer surroundings, particularly at night.

Phase 2 extended the initiative to high-traffic roads and populated neighbourhoods. Among the locations covered were Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Jalan Stakan Batu 7, and Taman Hui Sing, addressing concerns about road safety and night-time accessibility.

Phase 3 focused on enhancing security and mobility for military personnel and their families. Lighting installations were carried out at Army Camp Penrissen and surrounding camps, including Army Camp Penrissen Lama, Army Camp Ria, and Army Camp Sebelas Melayu Semenggo.

The upcoming final phase will concentrate on remaining dark spots and areas with heavy pedestrian activity. This last stretch of the project aims to ensure that every ringgit of the remaining funds is utilised to enhance safety and improve the overall quality of life for residents. — DayakDaily
