KUCHING, May 8: Hot on the heels of the Thomas and Uber Cups, Haier Malaysia announced the return of its homegrown badminton competition, the Haier Cup, which will kick off in Kuching’s Arena Sukan on May 11, aiming to discover the next badminton champion.

Expanding its reach to four locations this year, the Haier Cup will not only captivate local fans but also enthusiasts nationwide. Joining the roster of venues are Johor (June 15), Penang (July 13), and Kuala Lumpur (Aug 3), with Kuching being the latest addition.

The winners from each location will compete in the Grand Finals on Aug 17, vying for attractive prizes including home appliances and cash.

The Haier Cup will culminate in a regional tournament on Aug 18 in Kuala Lumpur, where champions from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam will battle for the main title.

Haier Malaysia Brand Marketing assistant director Julian Thean noted that for Malaysians, badminton is not just a sport but a source of national pride.

“We are united in the passion for the game. The success of Malaysian players has elevated the status of badminton, inspiring many Malaysians to take up the sport and strive for excellence.

“In line with our growing focus on sports marketing, we introduced the Haier Cup last year as an annual avenue for badminton enthusiasts to pit their skills. The support and reception for our inaugural Haier Cup gave us great encouragement and we have increased the prize pool and number of locations to ease participation. It would be fantastic if Malaysia’s next badminton talent could be discovered during a Haier Cup,” he said in a media release today.

The inaugural Haier Cup 2023 attracted 392 participants across Johor, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.

With the addition of more locations and courts, Haier Malaysia aims to accommodate over 1,400 participants this year.

The Haier Cup welcomes all Malaysian amateurs aged 18 and above to participate in four categories: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Registration includes a limited edition tournament jersey and a Haier goodie bag. Fees are RM50 per person for singles and RM80 per team for doubles.
