Guest fined RM5,000 for stealing homestay’s air conditioner

KUCHING, June 14: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a man to a fine of RM5,000 for stealing an air conditioner unit belonging to a homestay.

Rashid Shahrudin, 30, from Kampung Haji Baki pleaded guilty to the charge framed before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.


The magistrate convicted him as charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 7 years or fine, or both, upon conviction.

She sentenced him to a fine of RM5,000 or in default to 5 months’ imprisonment.

The accused was charged with stealing an air conditioner unit of a homestay in Kampung Braang Bayur, at about 4pm on April 6.

According to the brief facts of the case, the accused checked into the homestay at about on April 6. When he had checked out of his room, the complainant, who is the landlord of the house found that the room was messy and the air conditioner was missing.

He made a police report for further investigation.

The police investigation subsequently revealed that the accused had sold the stolen air conditioner to a 63-year-old man.
