KUCHING, Sept 22: Four local authorities that make up Greater Kuching have paid a courtesy call to Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri at Sarawak police contingent headquarters here today to deliberate on the enhancement of safety and enforcement towards the agenda.
The four local authorities were the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
During the meeting, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who led the delegation, highlighted several recurring issues in MBKS areas that necessitate urgent police intervention.
They are the theft of Telekom manhole covers and internal copper cables, roadside overhead cable vandalism; missing underground street lighting cables; housing estate speed limit control; sharing accident-prone areas or roads; over-tonnage vehicles damaging city roads; concerns about posters and entertainment outlet operating hours; and increasing cyber-crime and online scams including but not limited to online loan shark and gambling, unauthorised online bank transfer, tele-scams, job scams, etc.
In view of that, he proposed that traffic police be on alert to install safety signage, similar to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), to aid in the clearance of oil spillages, a voluntary service to enhance road safety.
Additionally, efforts to prevent illegal parking in undesignated areas were identified as crucial for effective enforcement.
He also proposed the realisation of the safe city concept for Greater Kuching whereby this blueprint features four fundamental elements, namely the establishment of community policing to strengthen community-law enforcement relationships, an increase in the number of mobile police stations for improved responsiveness, expansion of the motorcycle patrol unit for enhanced mobility, and the strategic installation of CCTV cameras in selected crime-prone areas to bolster surveillance and security.
The delegation included MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos, MPP chairman Tan Kai, and MBKS deputy mayor Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
