MIRI, Oct 23: Nearly 20 graves at the Roman Catholic (RC) cemetery in Riam have been vandalised.

Graves at the cemetery were also vandalised last month, with more than 10 graves damaged.

It is believed that the culprits might have crept into the cemetery in the dark of the night to steal valuables from the dead.

According to Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, a police report was lodged on Monday afternoon by the RC cemetery administrator after the discovery was made earlier in the morning.

A sledgehammer believed used by the culprits.

“The incident was discovered around 9am. Initially, 10 graves at the cemetery were found to have been vandalised…. However, upon further investigation by the police, at least 20 final resting places were damaged in the incident,” said Lim when contacted today.

The case is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code for trespassing on burial places. — DayakDaily
