KUCHING, July 14: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will help in the six upcoming elections in Peninsular Malaysia.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the matter would be discussed and deliberated during a meeting among the GPS component parties tomorrow evening to determine the most effective ways of extending support.
“We are helping (in the six states elections in Peninsular Malaysia). However, (we need to discuss) in what ways we are helping. It needs to be communicated to GPS first,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Innocement Sdn Bhd and SCG International and YTL Cement Bhd at a hotel today.
As part of the inter-governmental collaboration under the unity government, particularly with Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof serving as the Deputy Prime Minister, Abang Johari said GPS has to extend its assistance as government to government.
He further mentioned that he had attended the Unity Government Leadership Consultative Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur three days ago (July 11).
During the meeting, Anwar expressed satisfaction with the preparations by the unity government’s machinery in the six states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan, which are set to go to the polls on Aug 12.
Meanwhile, United Malays National Organisation (Umno) president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has on July 2 expressed hope that GPS leaders will assist the party in campaigning during the six state elections in Peninsular Malaysia.
Zahid, who is also the BN chairman, said he was confident the six states could learn from GPS’ experience in the Sarawak election which has led to stability in the region. — DayakDaily
